Description

The Red Eye Tiger Rainbowfish is generally easy to keep and suited for the beginner to intermediate aquarist. It is an attractive PNG Rainbow Fish, and still considered rare in the aquarium hobby. The Red Eyed Tiger Rainbow Fish is an active community fish that enjoys a spacious planted aquarium. Males develop long fins and colour varies depending on mood. Body colouration can be olive-green to silvery with a rosy glow across the sides. There is a series of narrow orange-red lines between each scale row and the fins are usually clear, greenish-yellow, or sometimes nearly black. The orange-red lines on the sides are much brighter in mature males giving the body an overall reddish colour. Males also have a bright red eye. 

The Red Eye Tiger Rainbow Fish is native to lakes, slow-flowing streams and backwaters of the Mamberamo river system in West Papua.

Feeding:

Red Eye Tiger Rainbowfish are omnivores and will eat flake, small pellets, live, fresh, frozen, and freeze-dried. For optimal health, provide a variety of foods, which can include high-quality flake foods, brine shrimp, and any type of worms, as well as vegetable supplements and spirulina.

Western Rainbowfish are best suited to a longer aquarium as they are active and energetic swimmers. An aquarium 4ft or larger is recommended. They are also well known jumpers, thus their aquarium should be well covered.

Red Eye Tiger Rainbowfish are found in shaded rivers, creeks and streams located in West Papua New Guinea. They are happiest in a dimly lit environment. We recommend LED aquarium lighting with adjustable brightness to ensure the light level can be altered for happy fish.
